Kevin Spacey has apologised to fellow actor Anthony Rapp, after being accused of climbing on top of him in bed when he was aged 14.

The Star Trek: Discovery star, now aged 46, says the incident happened at Spacey's apartment in 1986, when the pair were both working on Broadway play Precious Sons.

Rapp says the then-26-year-old House of Cards star picked him up and carried him to the bed, after a party at the residence, in what he believed was an attempt to "seduce" him.

"I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually," Rapp told BuzzFeed.

"My stomach churns... I still, to this day, can't wrap my head around so many aspects of it - it's just deeply confusing to me."

Spacey has released a statement, saying he cannot remember the incident, but acknowledges it may have happened.

"If I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years," says Spacey.

The two-time Oscar-winning actor goes on to say that he chooses to live "as a gay man" and says keeping his personal life private has fuelled various rumours about him.

"I want to deal with this honestly and openly, and that starts with examining my own behaviour."

Rapp says he attended the party, where the incident allegedly took place, on his own, after befriending Spacey and was the only non-adult there.

He went into a bedroom and watched TV for some time, before realising everyone else had left and thinking he should go home too.

Spacey, he recalls, "sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression, when he came in the room, was that he was drunk."

The older star then "picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?', and then he lays down on top of me."

Rapp says he can't remember how long Spacey was on top of him, but after a short amount of time, he was able to "squirm away".

He says he has not spoken with Spacey since the incident, but that the Harvey Weinstein scandal has prompted him to speak out, in the hope it would "shine another light on the decades of behaviour that have been allowed to continue, because many people, including myself, being silent".
