Actress Kirstie Alley has courted controversy on Twitter with her theory about what caused Stephen Paddock to open fire on concertgoers on Monday.

Shortly after the Las Vegas shooting Alley, a vocal scientologist, said the rise in mass murders could be attributed to the use of prescription medication.

Paddock was prescribed valium (diazepam), an anti-anxiety medication three months before the shooting.

That revelation prompted Alley to tweet:  "We have to solve the mystery of why there were no 'shooters' or almost 0 before the 1980s. I know one common denominator other than guns."

"One additional common denominator of "shooters" is USA's mass usage of psychiatric drugs. A % do have side effects of VIOLENCE & SUICIDE."

Twitter users did not appreciate Alley's comments though with one user replying "Did you really just say that? Sit down. 58 people are dead."

But Alley doubled down on her claims, saying that her theory was backed by statistics.

Scientology strongly discourages the use of psychiatric medicines.

Tom Cruise, another celebrity scientologist, has famously spoken out about psychiatric medicines before.

He feuded with Brooke Shields about her use of anti-depressants in 2006 and had a heated interview on US TV about the use of antidepressants in 2005.
