Cate Blanchett delivered a stern message after accepting the Style Icon Award from Taika Waititi at the InStyle Awards this week.

The Thor: Ragnarok star's comment as she finished her speech may seem like common-sense, but in the wake of the on-going Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal she clearly felt it needed to be explained again.

"Women like looking sexy, but it doesn't mean we want to f**k you," Blanchett declared.

"No one says to [former Donald Trump advisor] Steve Bannon, 'You look like a bag of trash. Do you want me to throw you out?' But the comments that get said about what women wear on the red carpet - I mean. If you troll through those trolls on the Internet, just don't".

Blanchett's comments are in stark contrast to those of fashion designer Donna Karan, who was accused of victim-blaming for defending Weinstein at a film awards ceremony earlier this month.

"How do we present ourselves as women? What are we asking? Are we asking for it by presenting all the sensuality and all the sexuality?" Karan asked.

"You look at everything all over the world today and how women are dressing and what they are asking by just presenting themselves the way they do. What are they asking for? Trouble."

Karan said Weinstein and his wife were "wonderful people" and that the film producer had done "amazing things".

It's unclear if Blanchett's comments were a direct response to Karan's, but their contrast has been noted by online commentators.

The InStyle Awards were held at the Getty Center in Los Angeles on October 23 (local time).
