Comedian Kathy Griffin's Auckland show was interrupted tonight when a disgruntled audience member threw a bottle of tomato sauce towards her.

Ponsonby resident Tommy Carpenter, 60, brought the bottle with the intention of protesting a controversial photo where Griffin posed with a fake, bloodied Donald Trump head.

In an unsolicited call to Newshub, Mr Carpenter said he walked up to the stage halfway through the show at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.

He threw the bottle towards the US star, he said, but aimed slightly off so as not to directly hit her.

"She was pissed off that someone was there protesting," Mr Carpenter said.

"She picked up the sauce bottle and she held it over her head and said this and that."

Mr Carpenter noted several times that he believed there were a large number of gay and lesbian audience members, but denied this was the motivation behind his act.

An audience member confirmed the bottle was thrown and said the incident provoked booing from the crowd.

Griffin this week spoke of her belief that she had been blacklisted in Hollywood due to the decapitation photo.

During the show she spoke warmly of Auckland and at one point cried when recounting cruel things people said about her sister, who was dying of cancer.
