Frankie Muniz, the US actor best known for his starring role on Malcolm in the Middle, has revealed he can't really remember his time on the hit sitcom, because he suffers from severe memory loss.

The 31-year-old opened up on his health struggles on an episode of Dancing with the Stars, after contestants were asked to choreograph a dance based on their most memorable year.

"Most people would think my most memorable year is the year Malcolm in the Middle started, because it allowed me to live all these dreams of mine," he said.

"I've got really to do everything I wanted to do - but the truth is, I don't really remember much of that.

"It almost feels like it wasn't me [on Malcolm in the Middle] - there's no negative feelings, it's just I can't remember."

Muniz, who went on to become a race car driver and a drummer in a rock band after Malcolm in the Middle finished up in 2006, has no shortage of reasons for why he can't remember much from his past.

"I'm not actually sure how my memory loss started. I have had nine concussions, I've had a fair amount of mini strokes, transient ischemic attacks," he said.

"I'm not saying those things correlate exactly to the reason why my memory's not great, but I guess it could be.

"I've never been to the doctor and been like, 'Why don't I have a memory?' To be honest, I've never really talked about it."

The star said girlfriend Paige Price journals everything he does daily, so that he's able to look back. And while Muniz wishes he could just remember things more easily, he also has no regrets about the direction his life's gone in.

"It makes me a bit sad that it doesn't just pop back into my mind,"he said. "I don't even remember going to Australia - that's something people remember.

"My most memorable year is 2017, because I learned to live in the present. I'm happy with my acting career, I'm happy with the decision I made to drive race cars and focus on music.

"Even if I don't remember it all, I'm happy."
