The Raid director Gareth Evans in talks for Deathstroke

The Raid filmmaker Gareth Evans is reportedly in talks to write and direct a big screen adaptation of DC Comics' Deathstroke, with Joe Manganiello in the lead role.

A movie based on the villain has been in development for some time, with the Magic Mike XXL star thought to be debuting as the character in either Justice League or The Batman.

Evans hasn't released a film since 2014's The Raid 2, but has been working on follow-ups Blister and Apostle. He hasn't commented on the latest reports, but this week did post an image on Instagram of a Deathstroke book and mask set.

The Deathstroke character is a mercenary and assassin who first appeared in The New Teen Titans #2 in 1980.

He was meant to be a one-off villain for the Teen Titans, but was a hit and became a regular adversary for the squad before getting his own DC series in 1991.

Evans' two The Raid  films are widely praised as some of the greatest action films of modern times, along with the two John Wick  films.
