The 29th season of The Simpsons has debuted on US television with a fantasy-themed episode which ended with a serious message about a real-world disaster.

A short epilogue showed all of the beloved animated series' characters gathered together in support of hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, with the social media handles of charities UNICEF, Save the Children and the One America Appeal also displayed.

The Simpson family stands in the foreground of the clip, holding the Puerto Rican flag and a UNIDO sign, with a tear rolling down Lisa's face.

An image of the message was also shared on the The Simpsons' official Twitter and Facebook accounts following the episode.

The disaster has seen US President Donald Trump condemned for his response to the crisis, which has included enjoying a golfing jaunt as the US territory struggles and using Twitter to ridicule local officials for asking for assistance in saving lives.
