Retired actor and singer David Cassidy is reportedly conscious again after being put in an induced coma.

He was taken to a Florida hospital on Wednesday (local time) and admitted for multiple organ failure. He now requires a liver transplant and is also suffering from kidney failure.

Cassidy's long-time publicist told the Press Association the 67-year-old was "conscious and surrounded by family".

"Nothing is imminent and we are taking it day by day," she says.

Cassidy shot to superstardom in the early 1970s thanks to his role in musical sitcom The Partridge Family. The show was a huge success and sparked a phenomenon known as "Cassidymania", where the young singer's image was printed on pillowcases, lunchboxes and packs of gum.

Cassidy has openly discussed his struggle with alcohol dependence in recent years. He was arrested for driving under the influence on three different occasions between 2010 and 2014.

In February 2017, Cassidy announced he had been diagnosed with dementia after a disastrous performance in California where he slurred his words and reportedly fell off the stage.
