Grand Designs NZ 2017: Music Box

  • 07/11/2017

The latest episode of Grand Designs NZ chronicled the building of Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper and Mindy Pilbrow's mansion in Point Chevalier.

It's built on a piece of bush by the inlet that musician Mahuia’s mother lay in front of a tractor to save from developers. The developers then sold the land to her and a friend, and he has lived there all his life.

The home has a huge rooftop deck to compensate for no outdoor area for the child, a lightbox at the top of the house to enable light into the building which is surrounded by trees, and a home recording studio - just down the hall from Mahuia and Mindy's baby's room.

"The challenge here was how to create harmony between three radically different notes; inserting a new building into a fragile habitat, creating an inspirational music space and a place for family," says Grand Designs NZ host Chris Moller.

"Through stubborn perseverance, an obsession with detail and huge support from all those around them, I reckon they've pulled it off."
