International bestselling author thanks New Zealand for 5 cent coins

International bestselling author and vlogger John Green has publically thanked New Zealand, after a campaign to bring him five sent coins ended in thousands being posted to the US.

Mr Green was stressed and preparing for a tour to celebrate his new book Turtles All The Way Down, when he decided to collect New Zealand five cent coins to give to fans on the tour.

Finding little help on Ebay, the American turned to Twitter, asking if any followers could send him 'nickels'.

That's where Westlake Girls High School teacher-librarian Megan Davidson stepped in, calling through the media for people to send their old five cent pieces.

Ms Davidson had an overwhelming response, with thousands of five cent pieces posted to her. She received so many, postage to the US cost $500.

Many of the coins came from people who did not know the author, but simply wanted to help.

Mr Green was very thankful, saying that he was bowled over by Kiwis generosity.

"They had no idea I was going through a difficult time in my life and they had no way to know how much their generosity would mean to me, that I would dissolve into tears of gratitude, when thousands and thousands of tuatara coins arrived in the post, " he vlogged.

"To the Kiwis who made that happen, if you're watching, thank you. I know that you will say it was just a little thing, but little things matter."
