Investigation opened into Lil Peep's death after 'suspicious' messages uncovered

The death of promising hip-hop star Lil Peep is now being deemed "suspicious" by police, following the discovery of a series of troubling Twitter messages.

The New York-based rapper, who was a pioneer of the burgeoning emo/hip-hop scene, died aged 21 from a suspected overdose on Xanax, the anti-anxiety drug.

The YouTuber was found dead in his tour bus in Tucson, Arizona last month after failing to appear for a sound check ahead of a gig.

However, police have opened an investigation into his death as a result of messages from a woman close to Lil Peep show her seemingly gloating about how intoxicated he was "because of me and my friend".

The messages, obtained by gossip website TMZ, show the woman known as Mariah writing that the rapper "passed the f**k out" and "wouldn't wake up".

The toxicology report is yet to come back, which will confirm whether the assumption Lil Peep died from an overdose is correct.

"It appeared to have been an overdose from evidence found near his body - most likely from Xanax or a combination of different drugs," Sergeant Pete Dugan said.

"But we're not medical examiners. We have to wait for a toxicology report. Until we get that, we don't know the cause of death."

The toxicology report will also reveal whether police's suspicions that the Xanax Lil Peep ingested was laced with Fentanyl, a potent opioid pain medication, are correct.
