Today show anchor Matt Lauer has apologised following sexual assault allegations.

"Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterised, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed," Lauer wrote in a statement.

"As I am writing this I realise the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.

"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry."

The US talk show host was fired after a colleague laid a "detailed complaint" about "inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace", according to the board chairman.

Speaking to Variety, more than 10 women accusing Lauer of inappropriate conduct revealed the sordid details of his behaviour.

The allegations include giving a colleague a sex toy and showing another his penis.

Lauer is married with three children.
