Meghan Markle has described the "very romantic" moment Prince Harry popped the big question, in the pair's first interview since their engagement announcement.

The Suits actress told the BBC it was just another "cosy night" in at the Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

"We were just roasting chicken.

"It was just an amazing surprise - it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee."

"Of course," Prince Harry added.

Markle says it was an instant 'yes'.

"I could barely let you finish proposing," she says.

Prince Harry says in the moment the diamond ring, designed by himself, featuring diamonds from his Princess Diana's personal collection, was forgotten.

"There were hugs and I had the ring on my finger and I was like, 'can I give you the ring?' She was like, 'oh yes, the ring.'

"It was a really nice moment, it was just the two of us, and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well."

Despite doing long-distance, the couple have not spent more than two weeks without seeing each other in their two-years of dating.

"We made it work," Markle says.

After a mutual friend set the pair up on a blind date, things progressed quickly.

"It was definitely a set up," she says.

"It was a blind date, and it's so interesting because we talk about it now and then because I'm from the United States you don't grow up with the same understanding of the royal family.

"I now understand very clearly there's a global interest there.

"I didn't know much about him and so the only thing I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was 'is he nice'?

"So we met for a drink and I think very quickly into that we said, 'what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again'."

Prince Harry had never heard of Markle before, but says as soon as he saw her he thought, "I have to up my game".

"It was three, maybe four weeks later, that I managed to persuade her to join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars and we spent five days out there which was absolutely fantasic."

The royal says he's made sure Markle knows what she's getting herself in to.

"I know that I'm in love with this girl.

"But we still had to sit down on the sofa and have some pretty frank conversations."

"[It's] a big deal and it's not easy for anybody.

"But I know at the end of the day she chooses me and I choose her and whatever we have to tackle … will always be us together as a team.

"She's capable of anything."

Can we expect a pregnancy announcement anytime soon? Harry says no - but it is on their radar.

"One step at a time and hopefully we'll start a family in the future."
