Bryan Singer has been fired from directing Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody following clashes with lead star Rami Malek.

The Usual Suspects filmmaker halted production last week after being "unexpectedly unavailable", according to 20th Century Fox, which has now confirmed he's no longer in the job.

Singer's clash with Malek, who portrays Freddie Mercury in the film, was reportedly caused by the director's absence and led to "on-set chaos".

The pair are not reported to have physically attacked one another during their climactic confrontation, but Singer is said to have thrown an object.

Cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel had to direct filming on multiple days when Singer simply failed to turn up, according to reports, and the studio has now had enough.

"Bryan Singer is no longer the director of Bohemian Rhapsody," Fox told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement.

It's not the first time someone high-profile has left the project. Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play Mercury, but quit after arguments with Queen band members, while Dexter Fletcher was originally set to direct but quit in 2014 over "creative differences".

Fox is expected to name Singer's replacement within the next few days.
