DJ killed after stage collapses at Brazilian EDM festival

A storm at an EDM festival in Esteio, Brazil, has claimed the life of a DJ, after it caused the stage he was performing on to collapse.

Thirty-year-old Kalleby Freitas da Rosa, better known by his stage name DJ Kaleb Freitas, was playing to a crowd of about 5000 at Atmosphere Festival when the scaffolding he was standing under fell onto the stage below.

In video of the incident, the wind can be seen tearing through a flag hanging over the audience. It's believed the stage's structure toppled as a result of the gale.

Freitas suffered a critical head injury in the incident and, despite being rushed to hospital, was later pronounced dead. Several others on the stage were injured.

Atmosphere Festival organisers have since released a statement about the incident on the event's official Facebook page.

"We always cherish the safety of our attendees, following all the processes, reports and authorisations requested by the local authorities," it read.

"To our audience, we will keep you informed of all our actions to keep the truth about the facts that have occurred.

"Anyway, we're sorry. We lost a friend, an artist. Our priority is to assist the wounded and their families."

In a similar stage collapse in 2012, Radiohead lost their drum technician Scott Johnson. Ontario's Coroner has since launched a probe into his death.

It is not clear whether Atmosphere Festival could be made liable for Freitas' death.
