Ellen DeGeneres evacuating home after wildfire threat

Ellen DeGeneres has had to begin evacuating her animals from her Southern California home, as the threat of wildfires draws closer.

She and wife Portia de Rossi bought their US$18.6 million (NZ$27 million) coastal home in October.

The talk show host tweeted on Sunday (local time) that their home "is under threat of being burned".

"We just had to evacuate our pets. I'm praying for everyone in our community and thankful to all the incredible firefighters."

The house, located near Santa Barbara, is under threat from the Thomas fire, one of several wildfires currently burning in Southern California.

TMZ reports actor Rob Lowe has also evacuated his home, tweeting "praying for my town" on Sunday.

Firefighters had gained some ground battling the fires that have burned over the past week, as the winds eased on Saturday. At least one person has been killed.
