House of Cards final season going ahead without Kevin Spacey

The sixth and final season of House of Cards will move into production in 2018, without disgraced former lead actor Kevin Spacey.

Robin Wright will replace the Seven star in the lead role for the final eight episodes, Netflix has announced.

Spacey has been accused of multiple sexual assaults and harassment, at least one of which he has publicly apologised for.

"We are excited to bring closure to fans," says Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos.

The streaming company severed ties with Spacey on November 3 as the allegations against him mounted.

House of Cards was the first major original show to pop for Netflix, going on to become a massive production.

Sarandos said he was gratified to have reached the deal for the team of 370 people who directly work on the show, along with another "2000 people in Baltimore" who have jobs related to it.

The premiere date of the final season has not been announced.
