I'm still that guy from Little Britain - David Walliams

British actor and author David Walliams is in New Zealand to promote his new children's book - his 10th in a decade.

He's also a judge on Britain's Got Talent, and completed a swim across the English Channel for charity.

But the comedian told The AM Show on Monday morning that despite his career moving in other directions, he's still mainly known as that guy from Little Britain.

Little Britain was a character-based sketch show known for its catchphrases.

"Every day someone says a Little Britain catchphrase to me, and every time I'm in a shop and I ask for a receipt at the till someone says 'computer says no'."

"I have to [pretend to find it funny], as if they're the first person who's ever said it to me."

However Walliams says despite how tiresome the recitation of his jokes can become, he's grateful that he's even in a position where that happens.

"You know what, you're very lucky if you get to make a comedy show that's successful and that people get to know, and incredible that people in New Zealand know it too."

"I always think you're lucky if anyone knows who you are, and to be grateful if anyone wants a photo with you, or says your catchphrase to you.

"I'm delighted that people know who I am."

People once knew him by a different name, however - David Williams. He's only known as David Walliams now because of a name change that came at the start of his acting career.

"I had to join this actor's union in the UK called Equity, but you can't have two people with the same name and there was already someone called David Williams," he explained.

"I don't know why, but I thought at the time it was a good idea to make up my own name.

"But you know what, having a name like Walliams, when you do a Google search there's no one else like me."

Walliams travels to Auckland from Christchurch on Monday for the next phase of his book tour.
