Celebrity chef Mario Batali has been criticised for including a recipe for cinnamon rolls in his apology for sexual misconduct.

The 57-year-old chef stepped down from his popular food show, The Chew, after four women accused him of sexual harassment.

Allegations of Batali's sexual misconduct stretch back at least two decades, and reported incidents range from him making inappropriate comments about his restaurant employees to grabbing a female chef's breasts.

On Friday (local time), Batali sent out an email to his newsletter subscribers admitting to the allegations and apologising for his behaviour.

"I have made many mistakes and I am so very sorry that I have disappointed my friends, my family, my fans and my team," the email reads.

"My behaviour was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility."

Batali said he would "work every day to regain your respect and trust".

Bizarrely, he ended the email with a link to a recipe for "Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls".

The inclusion of a recipe in Batali's apology has drawn criticism on social media.

Many expressed confusion, disbelief and general weariness at the bizarre decision.
