Mark Hamill pays touching tribute to Carrie Fisher as Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres

Meeting your heroes is a very fraught business.

And when that hero is from a galaxy far, far away and has been a part of your life for 40 years - when that hero is Luke Skywalker - I'm not gonna lie, I was a scorching hot lava planet of a mess.

Thankfully, my R2-D2 T-shirt broke the ice in a heartbeat.

"He's saved more lives than any other character in the movies and he gets no credit," said Hamill.

"I got a medal, he didn't get a medal - it's droid discrimination."

With 40 years worth of questions to be asked in as many minutes, I had to ask what is it about Luke that mainlines immediately into my inner ten-year-old and resonates with generations of fans.

"He wasn't physically imposing, so I think young people felt most comfortable around Luke," said Hamill.

"Han Solo was a little scarier - he was a womaniser, a gambler, cynical. Leia was royalty and that can make people feel a little uncomfortable.

"[Luke] wasn't particularly gifted in any way, he was of average intelligence and very relatable to adolescents, who were anxious to discover what's over the horizon for them."

It's clear his Star Wars homecoming has been an utter joy for Hamill, after his cliff-hanger appearance in The Force Awakens had us longing for more.

Now the wait for Episode VIII is over and the 'Last Jedi' has returned.

Emotions run high, regardless, when a new Star Wars chapter is unveiled, but with the unexpected death of the inimitable Carrie Fisher late last year, those emotions become even more intense, magnified a thousand fold for those close to her.

"I miss her terribly, it's awful," said Hamill.

"I still can't fully get my head wrapped around it. I think of her in the present tense, not the past, and then of course you see her in the movie and it just gets me.

"It gives the film an air of melancholy it doesn't really deserve.

"In a way, I am selfishly angry that she's not here now... but I know that she would also want us to not be consumed with grief, to enjoy ourselves.

"That's what she was all about - enjoying every single moment."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in New Zealand at midnight tonight.
