Mark Hamill 'regrets' criticising Luke Skywalker in Last Jedi

Mark Hamill has backtracked on his controversial comments about the latest version of his most famous character being "Not my Luke Skywalker".

In a tweet today, the Star Wars actor told his over 2 million Twitter followers: "I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public."

The 66-year-old went on to praise Director Rian Johnson's vision of the film saying:

"Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private,  All I wanted was to make good movie... @rianjohnson made an all-time GREAT one! "

This tweet comes as a response to a widely shared quote from Hamill during a recent interview. "I almost had to think of Luke as another character," he told SensaCine. "Maybe he's 'Jake Skywalker,' he's not my Luke Skywalker."

Detractors of The Last Jedi have been using Hamill's comments as 'proof' that he disapproves of the film as a whole, even starting a petition to have the film removed the Star Wars canon.

Despite being a thundering box office success, the Last Jedi has courted huge controversy since its release. There's been a rave critical reception but a divisive fan reaction, currently sitting at a dismal 52 percent crowd favourability on Rotten Tomatoes.

The authenticity of the low ratings is up for debate however, as an alt-right group has claimed they deployed computer software to artificially lower the film's score. Newshub's own Kate Rodgers gave the film 5 Stars.

Whatever your opinion of the Last Jedi, it has proved a box office juggernaut, already earning over NZ$1b, with no signs of slowing down.
