Married At First Sight Australia cops criticism for 'sexist' contestant

Australian network Channel 9 has been condemned for using a contestant's rant about the role females ought to play in relationships as promotional material for a new show.

The ad for the upcoming season of Married at First Sight Australia features a man by the name of Dean talking about his ideal partner for a relationship.

The hypothetical woman he describes is both submissive and happy to assume a lower status to him as "the alpha male".

"It's hard to say without sounding sexist or something, but I like a girl that is a girl, she's girly and she knows that I'm the man and that I'm in charge," he says in the promo.

"Also I want someone that listens to me. I wanna be the alpha male and she needs to respect me as the man. I think that's a traditional role that still exists in a lot of other countries in the world, and Australia's lost that.

"A lot of guys are just afraid to be men now, and they're just getting whipped by their women. I don't agree with that, I don't know why that's happened. I want to bring it back."

The ad finishes with Dean sitting in a chair, with the words "wants to be loved, honoured and obeyed" emblazoned above him.

While the commercial is likely to have stirred up plenty of interest in the show - and indeed in who Dean gets paired up with - others are concerned for the woman that will have to marry him.

Twitter has been rife with criticism of Channel 9's decision to recruit Dean as a contestant.

Earlier this year, there was a huge backlash when Married at First Sight NZ contestant Andrew Jury was found to have sent vulgar and racist messages to a woman over Tinder.
