Black Panther blows away Marvel pre-sale record

Black Panther has sold more pre-sale tickets in its first 24 hours than any other Marvel Cinematic Universe film in history, according to Fandango.

The Ryan Coogler film is proving so popular, even star Lupita Nyong'o claims she couldn't buy tickets as they sold out 15 minutes after being released.

Captain America: Civil War previously held the record.

"I kid you not, 15 minutes later, I was trying to purchase tickets and they are sold out... sold out!" Nyong'o gleefully declared in a Twitter video.

Part of the excitement around Black Panther stems from its cast and crew, which feature a much higher proportion of people of colour than most superhero movies.

One of its posters features eight black stars prominently, with two white faces featured as secondary characters.

That prompted a viral Twitter video last month that featured elated movie fans wondering aloud if "this is what white people get to feel like all the time".

Black Panther opens in New Zealand cinemas on February 15.
