Kelly Clarkson has hit back at criticism over her decision to spank her daughter.

"I'm not above spanking, which people aren't necessarily into," the 35-year-old singer told Radio.com.

"I don't mean, like, hitting her hard.

"My parents spanked me and I did fine in life and I feel fine about it.

"I'm from the South y'all, so we get spankings."

Clarkson is open on social media about her three-year-old daughter River Rose and one-year-old son Remington Alexander, frequently posting photos with her kids.

But with spanking she says she's more cautious about doing it in public, as she is aware not everyone agrees with her.

Clarkson also says she always gives her three-year-old warning first.

"I'm like, 'Hi, I'm going to spank you on your bottom if you don't stop right now.'"

Smacking children became an illegal form of discipline in New Zealand in 2007. However, a report released mid-last year revealed it's still a commonly used punishment for many parents here.

In part four of the University of Auckland's study, Growing Up in New Zealand, only two-thirds of mothers reported they never use physical punishment.

Spanking children is legal in the United States, as long as it is not excessive and does not cause injury.
