New Zealand actor KJ Apa has signed on to star in The Last Summer, a romantic comedy being directed by William Bindley.

The Riverdale and Shortland Street star is the only star mentioned by the production company, Gulfstream Pictures, as the film was announced, although it also boasts an "ensemble cast".

Apa's will be the main character and filming is set to kick off on April 23.

"KJ is one of today's most talented and sought-after young stars both here and abroad, and we are excited to announce he will lead our ensemble cast," the film's producer Mike Karz said in a statement.

Gulfstream Pictures is headed by Karz, who produced the critically panned 2010 ensemble film Valentine's Day.

In addition to his lead role as Archie Andrews in Riverdale, Apa appeared in US film A Dog's Purpose last year.
