Pop star Fergie is being roasted online over her performance of the US national anthem before the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

The Black Eyed Peas star's take on 'The Star-Spangled Banner' appeared to make people at Los Angeles Staples Center laugh, including players Stephen Curry and Draymond Green along with celebrity attendees including Jimmy Kimmel and Chance the Rapper.

Fergie responded to the criticisms with a statement to media, admitting her singing didn't strike the right 'tone'.

"I've always been honoured and proud to perform the national anthem, and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA," she said.

"I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best".

Reality TV star Khloé Kardashian tweeted during the performance: "This All Star opening is confusing me. WTF is going on? Anyone?"

Comedienne Roseanne Barr, who infamously sang an off-key rendition of the anthem during a 1990 MLB game, tweeted: "Who saw Fergie's national anthem at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was better lowkey."

Fergie has not responded via Twitter to the controversy.
