Jessica Chastain is in negotiations to star in the sequel to hit 2017 horror movie It, reports Variety.

The Zero Dark Thirty and Molly's Game star would play the adult version of Beverly, who was portrayed by Sophia Lillis.

Chastain was named by director Andy Muschietti as the top choice for the role back in September, after starring in his 2013 film Mama.

"I love Andy [Muschietti]," Chastain told Screen Rant in November over rumours of her joining It 2.

"So, we'll see. Anything that [he's] doing I want to be a part of, so I hope we can make it happen."

Variety's sources emphasise that negotiations are early and the script is still being developed.

It was an enormous hit for New Line cinema and became the highest-grossing horror movie of all time, pulling in over US$700 million internationally from a production budget of US$35 million.

The sequel is set to be released in September 2019.
