The next Grand Theft Auto will reportedly be set between Vice City and South America, and be released in 2021 or 2022.

It'll also have a playable female character in the single-player campaign, following the franchise facing accusations of sexism and featuring exclusively male protagonists so far.

Rockstar Games, the hit franchise's creator, is yet to comment on the rumour as they prepare their next release, Red Dead Redemption II.

The report on Grand Theft Auto VI comes from popular YouTube channel The Know, which previously accurately reported leaked information on Dark Souls III.

Grand Theft Auto games have been set in three main locations - Liberty City, based on New York City; Vice City, based on Miami; and San Andreas, based on Los Angeles and its surrounding areas.

The upcoming game is apparently codenamed Project Americas.

Grand Theft Auto V, originally released in 2013, had sold over 85 million copies as of March 2018, making it the best-selling video game of all time.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released in 2003. Set in Florida in the 1980s, it was heavily influenced by Scarface and Miami Vice.
