Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One getting roasted on Twitter

Steven Spielberg's upcoming film Ready Player One is the subject of a social media pile-on, getting ridiculed for what many say is a misguided marketing campaign.

The science-fiction movie is set in a future where people spend most of their time in a virtual reality, which references a lot of cult movies from the '80s and '90s.

A series of posters for the film are its characters edited into reworks of classic posters for movies including The Matrix, Labyrinth, The Goonies, Blade Runner, Rambo II, The Lost Boys, Beetlejuice, The Breakfast Club and Back to the Future.

While some film fans are into the posters, others are expressing outrage and mocking them mercilessly.

South Park creator Trey Parker referred to Ready Player One as "the most Member Berry thing ever invented", suggesting it's the most the most intense cash-in on pop culture nostalgia of all time.

Twitter user Demi Adejuyigbe has released a parody Ready Player One theme song, which is a humourously accurate musical interpretation of the poster campaign.

Warner Bros has not officially commented on the negative backlash the posters have provoked, but some of the tweets are particularly savage.

Ready Player One is released in New Zealand on March 29.
