After years of publicly battling a cigarette addiction, Ed Sheeran took to Instagram to congratulate himself on having kicked the habit.

The 'Shape Of You' singer captioned a black and white photo from one of his concerts "celebrating one year of being a non-smoker today."

Sheeran has previously spoken out about struggling to quit, telling Ryan Seacrest in 2014 that he had started smoking at just 13 years old.

"It sounds bad to say, but I turned 23 two weeks ago and realised I had been smoking for 10 years."

At the time of the interview, the pop star said he had given up, however his latest post marking the one-year milestone indicates it took more than one attempt.

In an appearance on Ellen in 2015, Sheeran once again said he was going cold turkey.

"I started smoking when I was younger and I'd always say 'ah, I'm going to quit, I'm going to quit... but I haven't been smoking for that long'."

"But when it got to 10 years, I was like, 'I'm probably getting to the point of no return here'."

Further evidence that the English musician's rock and roll tendencies might be behind him came in the form of a leaked rider for his 2017 Glastonbury performance.

According to NME, Sheeran's extremely modest Glastonbury rider is comprised simply of a bottle of squash, a six-pack of Coca-Cola, a six-pack of Diet Coke, a six-pack of Fanta Orange, a six-pack of Sprite and a jar of Manuka Honey.
