Australian actress Cornelia Frances, who played Morag Bellingham on Home and Away, has died at the age of 77.

She passed away overnight on Monday in the company of friends and family in Sydney, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The actress had been diagnosed with bladder cancer over a year ago, which had spread to her hip.

Home and Away actor Ray Meagher, who played Morag's brother Alf, has paid tribute to her in a statement.

"Cornie was an incredibly loved and valued member of our cast over many, many years," he said.

"We had a moment of silence for her on set this morning and she'll be sadly missed by both cast and crew."

Frances starred in a number of roles in addition to Home and Away, including on Sons and Daughters, Prisoner, Young Doctors and Kingswood Country as well as hosting The Weakest Link.
