You wouldn't give the meals provided by the Southern District Health Board to your pets according to a new coalition protesting the commercial food provider.

The Real Meals Coalition - which includes Labour, the Greens and New Zealand First as well as unions and other local organisations - are calling on the DHB to dump commercial provider Compass.

The outside provider has been contracted for 15 years but locals want food services brought back in-house.

"Being in hospital is hard enough for anyone as it is," spokeswoman Anna Huffstutler said on Wednesday.

"Patients don't need the extra slap in the face being served meals that they wouldn't even feed to their pets."

The group will be holding a protest outside Dunedin Hospital on April 29.
