A children's Halloween product has been recalled with warnings it could lead to death.

Countdown supermarkets are recalling the flashing Halloween spinning wands because the button cell batteries in them can be easily accessed by children.

The cover isn't screwed down and can be opened without a tool, which presents a risk to young children - who would suffer internal burns that may kill them if the batteries are eaten.

While no injuries have been reported, Countdown is asking that people return wands bought between September 19 and October 28 for a full refund, as "a precautionary measure".

The supermarket chain says it takes product safety "very seriously", and offered an apology to those affected by the recall.
