Wellington has welcomed the inaugural flight that will further cement links between the capitals of New Zealand and Australia.
A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-200 landed on Wednesday afternoon filled with dignitaries and journalists.
The airline says it will be the first to have a service between Wellington and Canberra.
The flight is part of a "Capital Express" route - Wellington-Canberra-Singapore - which will operate four times a week.
It comes after Wellington and Canberra signed a new sister city agreement in July.
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce says the service will "open a world of possibilities" for the city's businesses with potential for an economic and tourism boost.
"The flights will benefit Wellington businesses by bringing the international market to Wellington and will make it easier for local businesses to create connections with companies in all three cities," chief executive John Milford says.
