People who've purchased a new kayak for kids are being warned not to let them go paddling on the water, as a fault could make them sink.

A Government product safety recall has been issued with a warning that the plastic Youth Kayak, which is designed for children up to 60kg, "could cause water to enter the kayak and sink".

The major supplier Rebel Sport has posted on its Facebook page: "If you have purchased a Lifetime Youth Kayak 6 foot kayak, DO NOT USE & please return to your nearest Rebel Sport store for a full refund [sic]."

Several people have commented on the post saying they had bought one, with a number having bought the product from marine shop Burnsco.

But a Burnsco spokesperson says investigations so far show the batch of the kayaks they've been selling do not have the fault.

"We've checked our stock and been in discussion with the manufacturer regarding the batch that has been affected," he says.

Rebel Sport has been approached for comment.
