If you're thinking about getting into the trades, now could be the time to make the move.

New figures reveal the number of dwelling consents approved in March was up nearly 20 percent in Auckland, and 16 percent in Waikato.

Warwick Quinn from the Industry Training Organisation says they're desperate to get more hands on deck.

"We've got a real focus on attracting the young and others into the trades, and we also are trying to extend the number of employers who are willing to train by offering more flexible training options, aligning that skill need they'll be seeking closer to their business needs."

Mr Quinn estimates that another 60,000 staff will be needed over the next five years.

More than 30,000 new dwellings were consented in the year ended March 31, up 10 percent on the year before. That includes 1923 houses, 407 townhouses, flats and units, 252 apartments and 197 retiree units.

It's about double the number consented in 2012.
