Facebook may be taking its platform to the next level, reportedly eyeing new "TV-like" shows, which could launch on the site next month.

According to Business Insider, there are around 24 shows planned for the first launch in mid-June - a mix between short shows less than 10 minutes long and others that would "feel at home on TV".

The report comes just days after its competitor, YouTube, announced a series of new original shows featuring big-name celebrities. It's signed on stars including musician Demi Lovato and comedians Ellen DeGeneres and Kevin Hart.

Despite YouTube having a premium subscription service, the shows will be live on the site's free service, supported by ads.

Facebook's new show service would also live on its free site, sources told Business Insider.

It would be monetised by mid-roll ads, which have been rolled out on the site this year.
