Newshub wins Best News Website or App at Canon Media Awards

Newshub has been named Best News Website or App at the 2017 Canon Media Awards.

The Newspaper Publishers' Association, which runs the awards, in a tweet said Newshub was "fast, truly excellent & relevant", and cited political editor Patrick Gower's "outstanding" coverage of the US election.

The AM Show's Duncan Garner won Opinion Writer of the Year, for his pieces in The Dominion Post.

Newshub's app was first released on February 1, 2016, the same day the former 3 News and RadioLIVE newsrooms officially became one. The current look of the Newshub website was launched on December 15, 2016.

Elsewhere in the digital category, singer Lizzie Marvelly's Villainesse won best blog, while Newspaper of the Year (more than 30,000 circulation) went to The New Zealand Herald, and for less than 30,000, The Nelson Mail.

The overall Canon Newspaper of the Year prize went to the Weekend Herald.

The Herald's Matt Nippert won Reporter of the Year.
