Businesses in Kaikōura are celebrating now the state highway to the town has reopened.

The road was closed for more than a year, following the November 2016 magnitude 7.8 earthquake, and businesses struggled, as the flow of tourists into the town dried up.

Economic recovery leader Mel Skinner says some businesses have gone from one extreme to another, but the road can be a bit delicate.

"I spoke to one shop about four days after the road opened and they had done the same turnover as the previous six weeks, so it's definitely making a huge difference to turnover of businesses," she told Newshub.

"The road is very dependent on weather, so if we have a nice dry summer with minimal rain, it should be fine for the road."
