The twin brothers who sued Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have become the first bitcoin billionaires.

Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss attended Harvard with Zuckerberg and claimed he stole the idea for the social media site Facebook from them.

The brothers, who represented the US in rowing at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, settled out of court with Zuckerberg for an undisclosed sum, thought to be around US$95 million (NZ$138m).

Four years ago the pair invested US$11 million (NZ$16m) in the online currency bitcoin the Telegraph reported.

The online currency has surged by over 10,000 percent since then and their stake is worth over US$1 billion.

They are the first investors to publically state they have broken US$1 billion mark from investing in bitcoins.

The brothers are still a long way behind Zuckerberg, who is estimated to be worth around US$70 billion (NZ$101b).
