A statue built out of tools and resembling Marvel superhero Iron Man has drawn a "massive response" at a handful of hardware stores across Wellington.

The giant figurine, which is significantly larger than the suit worn by Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr sported in the much-loved film series, is currently standing in Mitre 10 MEGA in Porirua.

The statue was built by power tool company Bosch and features a range of its tools, which have been joined together and configured to resemble the hero.

Amy Blake, the advertising and events manager for Mitre 10 MEGA's Petone, Porirua and Upper Hutt stores, says the "fun, interactive" figurine has proven to be a "really cool talking point".

"It's a different avenue to connect with our customers," she told Newshub.

The large sculpture has also been a hit on Reddit, where it has attracted hundreds of up-votes.

The statue has inspired a colouring competition, Ms Blake says, which has drawn "stacks and stacks" of entries after first being displayed at the Petone store.

It has now shifted to the Porirua franchise, and Ms Blake says the figure has offered up a new way to present the Bosch tools available at the store.
