A damaged fibre cable in Sydney may have slowed down your Netflix streaming on Wednesday evening.

Technicians worked through the night to fix the major fibre cut, which affected internet users in New Zealand and the United States.

Vocus, which owns Orcon, Slingshot and Flip, said the damage to the fibre was caused by a third party performing civil works.

"A digger has cut multiple fibre lines in Sydney which the team are in the process of fixing, but it will take several hours," Slingshot said in a statement.

"We're really sorry about this - our network team are tweaking things to minimise the disruption while the fibre is being repaired."

Regular fibre connection resumed around 3:30am.
