The deaths of a woman and three children found in an Ashburton house last week have been referred to the coroner.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Womer this afternoon confirmed post-mortems on the bodies of Cindy George, 31, and her children, Pio, Teuruaa and Telyzshaun, had been completed, but says the investigation is on-going.

Ms George's body was found in a hallway at the property on Thomson St in the suburb of Tinwald at around 4pm on July 2. The three children were found in a lounge area where they had been watching TV.

Police say their deaths appeared to have been caused by accidental gassing and believe a car in the garage had been left running in an effort to keep the battery charged.

However, when officers were called to the property on Thursday, the vehicle was out of petrol and the battery was flat.

It is not known how long the family had been dead in the house for, but police believe their bodies may have lain undiscovered for up to a week.
