A 22-year-old man accused of assaulting and murdering Christchurch toddler Ihaka Paora Braxton Stokes has reportedly been attacked in prison.

The man, whose name is supressed, was in a remand unit at Christchurch Men's Prison when the incident involving several other inmates happened yesterday, Fairfax Media reports.

The media outlet understands he was not seriously injured, and is now being held in protective custody.

Police have previously said two-year-old Ihaka suffered multiple blunt force injuries including fractured bones in an assault or assaults earlier this month.

He died in Christchurch Hospital following an emergency call at a home on Truman Rd.
