Social media has once again proved its power when a lost GoPro, complete with selfie stick, was returned to its travelling owners.

Auckland police posted a photo found on the GoPro on their Facebook page, asking followers for help tracking down the mystery owners.

Within an hour, the couple had been identified as Ely Mendoza and Florian Moser by friends tagging them in the post.

The couple were extremely pleased to be reunited with their holiday memories and profusely thanked police and all who helped identify them.

"OMG!! I Can't believe what I'm reading! [sic]" wrote Ms Mendoza.

"I'm really glad that you found the Gopro camera Auckland Police and that I'll have it back. That's the kind of things that just happen in this amazing country. One more reason to love it [smiley faces] Thank you very much! [sic]"

Mr Moser added, "amazing how lucky we are to get all the pictures back thanks Auckland police [sic]".

The Hero 3+ GoPro was found on March 7 in the Waitakere Ranges, and police said it held an estimated 1000 photos from around New Zealand.
