A man's been seriously burnt in a Bay of Plenty woolshed blaze that was initially believed to be intentionally lit.

The Fire Service is investigating the fire which started just after 10pm on Monday on Waitao Road, south of Mt Maunganui, spokesman Jaron Phillips says.

The man was taken to Tauranga Hospital's emergency department.

An investigator initially thought the blaze at the woolshed was suspicious, but after checking out the place last night, decided it probably wasn't.

The investigator is returning to the scene this morning.
