Police have named the patient who died after an ambulance crash in Northland as a 66-year-old man from Kaeo.
Sonny Rawhiti Kemp was a patient in the St John ambulance which hit a power pole on State Highway 1 at Moerewa on Tuesday morning before it could deliver him to Bay of Islands Hospital.
The ambulance had just 5km further to go on its 55km trip from Kaeo to the hospital in Kawakawa.
Police say Mr Kemp was critically ill before the crash but now three investigations are under way which will try to determine if it contributed to his death.
Three ambulance officers were also in the vehicle. Two have since been discharged from hospital and the other is in a satisfactory condition in Whangarei Hospital.
A police spokeswoman told NZ Newswire Mr Kemp's health details could not be revealed for privacy reasons.
She could not say whether the ambulance had its lights on at the time of the crash.
Police, St John and the coroner will be investigating the crash death.
