A large crane has been called to rescue a digger from a sinkhole in Christchurch.

The entire body of the machine appears to have sunk into the ground at a site on St Johns St in Woolston.

Workers will attempt to remove the digger today and St John St will be closed between St Lukes St and Reserve Cl for some time, according to the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre.

A detour is available through St Lukes St and access to Tamariki School will be maintained.
