Police are giving a Thames schoolgirl a pat on the back after she gave her attacker a kick in the groin.
The 16-year-old was walking alone in the Coromandel town on Tuesday when a man indecently assaulted her on the street.
Staying clear-headed, she kneed him in the genitals before running away and calling for help.
Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes says police commend the young woman's actions and say victims are encouraged to take "the appropriate steps necessary to remove themselves from areas of threat".
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack.
The offender was described as a clean-shaven male with olive skin aged in his late 20s who was reasonably tall and wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
