One person has died in an apartment fire in Auckland this afternoon.

The Fire Service confirmed the death, which happened in mid-afternoon at an apartment block on Queens Rd in Panmure.

The person was found in a ground-floor bedroom of the three-level apartment block, where CPR was performed without success.

Firefighters searched for a second person knowing to be living at the apartment, but did not find anyone else in the property.

Several neighbouring apartments were smoke logged.

Seven fire engines and 30 firefighters are at the scene.

Firefighters say the apartment did have a smoke alarm, which was activated. The blaze is now contained.

The west-bound lane on Queens Rd is closed and people are being asked to avoid the area.
